The news recently dropped that Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones will be bringing a comedy event special entitled Death to 2020 to Netflix. The streamer released a teaser for the upcoming project that sums it up with, “even the creators of Black Mirror couldn’t make this year up, but they do have something to add.” It’s a mockumentary of sorts that combines the voices of fictitious experts commenting on real events from this year, complete with actual archival footage from the last 12 months. We’ve aggregated some of the top stars you can see in the upcoming special, along with reasons why each one is a perfect fit for such a project.
1. Samuel L. Jackson
The veteran thespian is more than 70 years old and still going as strong as ever. From his breakthrough role as Gator in Jungle Fever to his memorable portrayal of Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, the actor is an icon. He’s been in both the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, and Esquire calls him “a muse to Spike [Lee] and Quentin [Tarantino].” He adds some serious star power to the lineup for the upcoming project, as well as a deft ability with comedy. Plus, the actor has been vocal on his social media platforms regarding the politics that have shaped 2020, making him a great fit for a project that falls within the political comedy genre.
2. Kumail Nanjiani
The Silicon Valley actor is known for his comedic chops, whether it be for his work on the HBO series or in the recent Netflix feature The Lovebirds that he starred in opposite Issa Rae. He also starred in The Big Sick and is married to his co-writer of the semi-autobiographical feature, Emily V. Gordon, who is in a high-risk group for COVID-19. Nanjiani has been outspoken since the beginning of the pandemic on the importance of following safety measures to prevent the spread of the virus, and we think he’ll have a lot to say about it in the upcoming project through the voice of his character.
3. Lisa Kudrow
Kudrow may be best known for her role as Phoebe in Friends, but the actor has a number of other comedic credits to her name, such as in this year’s Netflix series Space Force. And let’s not forget her work as the star of Web Therapy. Fiona Wallice was utilizing video calls long before they became a staple of our everyday lives in 2020 so Kudrow has plenty of practice portraying a character through that medium.
4. Diane Morgan
Morgan is a British actor and comedian who has already worked with Brooker on his BBC Wipe franchise, which also features fictitious talking heads commenting on real, recent events. And while Morgan won’t be reprising her role of Philomena Cunk for this new Brooker project, her experience with such closely-related material from the creator makes her an obvious choice for Death to 2020.
You can be on the lookout for a number of other big names besides Jackson, Nanjiani, Kudrow, and Morgan when Death to 2020 is released. One example is Hugh Grant, who told Vulture he’ll play a “pretty repellant” historian in it but promises “you’ll like my wig.” You can also catch Leslie Jones, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Cristin Milioti, and Joe Keery in the upcoming project. Netflix is still keeping the release date a mystery, but if its star-studded comedic cast is any indication, the special will bring some much-needed levity to the year 2020 when it arrives.
